[posila] Game on Steam won't launch

Post by Turtleshot »

It used to launch without any problems up until today, I played 90 hours without any issues, but now when I start the factorio from steam, it just doesn't start, no error messages or anything. I look into my task manager and Factorio isn't even running. I don't really know what to do and I need help. I could give more information but I don't know what kind of information would help to fix this issue.

I re-installed/re-downloaded the game, run as admin, run as admin from exe, couldn't find anything that would make a change.

Please help. I love this game.

I have no more folder in %appdata%, is that supposed to be the case after a clean install? I saved it somewhere and the log-file ends when I stopped playing yesterday with the goodbye thing, so I don't think it would be any help. Here is it, though.

Here's my config.ini, maybe there's something in there that needs fixing.

I've been running the game for 90 hours without any trouble, my pc runs the game very smoothly on the best graphics. I can even play online without any lag. I played about 30 hours since 12.26. When I start the game, either from Steam Library or the Factorio shortchut it says ''preparing to launch Factorio'' and then this window closes and nothing happens.

Specs :

Factorio should be able to create the required directory structure itself. Also directories shouldn't just randomly disappear on their own. Maybe if you run Factorio in a terminal it might tell you what it doesn't like about your system.

Launching it from the terminal gives only this one line, even it it works perfectly (tried on my steam install).
This approach only works when using the drm-free website version, then you get the same output as in the log file.

You can try completely removing Factorio from the computer and reinstalling:
  • Uninstall any version of Factorio installed
    • Factorio Demo
    • Factorio (website version)
    • Factorio on Steam (right click the game in the Library and select "Delete Local Content...")
  • Delete the folder %appdata%\Factorio (C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Factorio), backup the saves if there are any
  • Delete the folder steamapps\common\Factorio
  • Restart the PC
  • Install Factorio on Steam

Oh, sad. Makes things somewhat more inconvenient to debug.

If you are up for some heavy duty stuff there is other way that might possibly give some hints as to whats going on.

Drop by this link: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sys ... nitor.aspx

It's an official tool that allows for quite detailed process monitoring.
You would need to run it before trying to run Factorio and then go to filter menu, select process name as conditions and write Factorio.exe in the box.
Then click Add and Apply. Window should get empty since no events should match the criteria.
Then try to start Factorio and see what pops up there. Considering that it fails quite quickly it should be a short list - try to screenshot it and post it here maybe devs can figure something out of it.

Better yet, go to File --> Save and save it as PML file and zip it before uploading, as that file contains a lot more information than a screenshot, including process information and the stack for each event.

I was not recommending that since it contains also a lot of other information that pertains to his system and whats going on on it.
Will it save only filtered events or all ?

It will only save the filtered events currently on screen. If that is still too much, saving it as CSV will only save the actual event data seen on screen, not the detailed event properties.

Well so far I've reinstalled the whole game, reinstalled steam then reinstalled the whole game, did a restart on every reinstall and it still does the same, steam tries to launch Factorio, then it doesn't start. I'll try your program and see what's happening. I don't have DRM-free version, but I kind of want it now. Is there a way to get the DRM-free version from Steam Version?

Here's the PML file from trying to start factorio. This might help?

Could you upload D:\Steam\GameOverlayRenderer.log after trying to launch Factorio.

Also I would be interested in Report.wer file. It should be located in one of the folders starting with AppCrash_Factorio.exe_ in %localappdata%\Microsoft\Windows\WER\ReportArchive\
(for example C:\Users\<user_name>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\WER\ReportArchive\AppCrash_Factorio.exe_4c56fc92865f3fd3dc298cb35e6637026807e7d_5249c762_cab_412ac45a)

There is no AppCrash file as this is not a 'crash', the game just isn't starting, nothing appears at all. No error message, it says 'preparing to launch Factorio', then this message dissapears and nothing happens. I just made a system restore to 6th march and it didn't do anything. It's very weird.

Can you give me an access to the game while this issue is being fixed, to maybe test if this also affects the non-steam version? I'm just asking, I really enjoy the game. ;)

Re: [posila] Game on Steam won't launch

Post by posila »

It sound similar to following two issues.

There were reports sometimes an antivirus makes the game crash like this:
http://steamcommunity.com/app/427520/di ... 163955893/

Or some third party software like Logitech QuickCam or Razer Synapse:
http://steamcommunity.com/app/427520/di ... 346174044/

I asked for Report.wer, because in PML I saw WerFault.exe was executed before Factorio closed, so I assumed it created some the report.

Anyway, can you try to run following commands fom command line?

Code: Select all

start /wait Factorio --create NewTestGame
start /wait Factorio --start-server NewTestGame
The first one creates new save and the second one will run the save in headless server. The point of this test is that both options don't run SteamAPI Init, which would restart the process under Steam, so you will be able to see what the game prints to console. Then stop the server by Ctrl + C.

I'll ask if we can get you an account on factorio.com, in meantime you can test if demo runs: https://www.factorio.com/get-download/0 ... n64-manual
