Hey there,

I have noticed this type of freeze for quite some time now, over many versions. I could not find any bug ticket describing this problem so here you go:

To reproduce the bug,
1) make some changes to the mod list then reload factorio.
2) start or load a game.
3) open the steam overlay with shift+tab or send factorio window in the background (other desktop).
4) factorio freezes.

I am running arch linux with awesomeWM and have a 2060 nvidia card.

Hey there!
My game (and subsequently computer) froze upon getting the "steam power" achievement. I was handfeeding stuff and it got stuck, see screenshot. Music kept playing but I couldn't interact with anything or open any GUIs.

The log file doesn't seem to say anything special:

The fact that your entire computer froze makes me suspect it's a hardware issue.

That could be the case. The computer didn't completely freeze, I was able to switch windows but not interact and log out and back in using keyboard shortcuts.
I haven't been able to reproduce the bug.

[2.0.7] Freeze during achivement Steam power

Startet a new game no mods only full expansion set (Base, Elevated Rails, Quality, Space Age) all default settings.
Steam powered Lab, Turrets as research selected.
Game Freeze on getting the achivement Steam power.

Could not reproduce as I now have the achivement. If that even was the problem.
Hope that is the right log.

I am running under linux and had a similar (the same?) issue. The steam power achievement popped and the game froze completely. Sound was still working but I could not interact anymore and the last rendered frame was frozen into place. I had to forcefully stop the game via the Steam "Stop" button. I could still tab out of the game and use other desktop applications normally.

I can confirm that the issue did not reoccur after I loaded the latest autosave, rebuilt and started my steam power plant again.

The next achievement I popped ("Research with Automation") did also NOT trigger the problem a second time.

[2.0.7] Freezing at several points on Linux

Had two crashes already running on Debian Linux with an nVidia GPU + AMD CPU (using X11). First was after deleting old mods and clicking confirm - the game just hard froze with sound stopped and had to be killed from Steam. Second was about 20 minutes later after playing, I received an achievement unlock popup for steam power and had the same style of freeze again. Logs for the game and system don't seem to have anything relevant:

[2.0.7][Linux] Crash when unlocking "steam-power" achievement

I've just made a new save file for Space Age and when I unlocked steam power my game locked up and seemed to crash. When I reloaded the game to try and reproduce this, I couldn't, as I already have this achievement unlocked.

Everything so far is pointing to the freeze being in the steam overlay, which means it is this bug again: 111743

In other words: to avoid this, just restart the game.

I have reproduced the issue, it is indeed the same root cause as 111743.

Workaround is to quit the game and re-launch via steam, or change to Wayland in the graphics settings (in which case, the steam overlay won't work whatsoever).

I had a similar issue on MacOS. Game froze just after the steam achievement popped up. Wasn't the first achievement to pop. The first three automatic achievements after crafting specific items worked fine. It happened after the first achievement using paid research that I did (Automation)

Presumably disabling the Steam overlay in-game will also work around this problem?

I've also had seemingly random freezes (twice now) on macOS (10.14.6) on version 2.0.7, log attached. Can't tell if it had anything to do with Steam notifs going off as I was in menus both times it happened. Odd behaviour of the app as well, screenshot attached - there appear to be 2 Factorio instances going for some reason. Starting from Steam in all circumstances.

freeze after achievement

The game froze for more than a minute after I got my first achievement in 2.0

I had already set up steam power, I shift clicked the red science into the lab and the lab started drawing power and I got the achievement for producing power. Factorio froze the same moment I got the achievement pop up on my screen.

I could move my cursor, the menu was highlighting the inventory slots as I moved my cursor (iirc? im 80% sure). Environment sounds were still playing. I tabbed out of Factorio and couldn't get back in. After that I had to force quit.

Playing on Sonoma 14.3.1
The bug did not repeat after the any of the next achievements.

I have reached out to Valve about this issue. The hang is happening inside the overlay renderer so there is nothing I can do to fix it.

The funny part is, this bug also existed in 1.1, but everyone already had all the achievements so they weren't running into it! :D
