I too think it's weird that this isn't possible.
Factorio is an early access game though, I fully expect the ability to change a station without loosing the settings to be a planned feature. Anything else doesn't really make sense.

I think it would streamline the game experience a lot if you could set the game to let Ctrl-c/x, alt-u/d etc. override what you are holding. I find it a constant annoyance to have to press q to before I can use mentioned shortcuts, so I suggest to add a checkbox that lets you change this behaviour. ...
