Re: Covarex in a row anyone?

Im looking for a simple stackable solution stacking a bunch of Covarex machines in a line so that they start with the first one introducing the 40 good uranium and then filling subsequently one after the other with the good uranium - and the bad as well. Something like this? uraniumProcessing1.png ...

Re: Nano factory with push down automata

There is no count for things the bots would like to pick up. To see unsatisfied requests you have to put an item in a chest so a bot comes to pick it up. So you have to produce one of everything ahead of time. Which is a great pity for low-volume high-cost items like rocket silos or spidertrons. No...

Re: What are the most impractical items in Factorio?

Each efficiency 2 in a furnace reduces pollution by 0.1/m. Unfortunately, even with maximum efficiency 1s everywhere along the production chain, making that efficiency 2 module emits about 60 units of pollution. So it takes ten hours before the savings match the cost. So after 100 hours I've made u...

Re: What are the most impractical items in Factorio?

Eff 2 is useful to get electric furnaces to -80% power, since they only have the two slots. For a good portion of the game furnaces are the biggest power user, and a top three source of pollution, since there are usually so many of them. If you're on a map where every bit of pollution counts, they'...

Re: What are the most impractical items in Factorio?

the most useless is going to be efficient module lv3 (lv2 comes 2nd) i'll be surprised if this item is not on your anyone's top 10 (or rather, bottom 10). Efficiency 2 and 3 are useless as final products, yes. But needed as an ingredient in power armour and spiders respectively. tanks are great bul...

Re: Circuits with TrainsStops, how to do pause only when red signal is present and = 1

But for requester chests I believe you can read the contents and set the requests and not have the chests own contents get added to the requests. Unfortunately not. Setting requests and reading contents are mutually exclusive options. (Perhaps precisely because the undesirable positive feedback wou...

Re: All the different ways to increase the efficiency of a nuclear power plant

I do use the removal of the spent fuel cell as trigger; I do not make a fuel check. I do start my reactors up manually (actually, I find that quite a satisfying thing to do, like a sort of ceremonial ribbon cutting), but in a cumulative total of hundreds of hours of running time across various size...

Re: All the different ways to increase the efficiency of a nuclear power plant

Note: The fuel check in my designs, or any design that uses the removal of the spend fuel cell as trigger, is necessary. If you ever remove a spend fuel cell without a fresh fuel cell to put into the reactor the setup dies. That's really the only argument I need. I do use the removal of the spend f...

Re: All the different ways to increase the efficiency of a nuclear power plant

Requiring the entire belt to be backed up before starting a nuclear reactor breaks principles 1 and 2, and potentially 3 depending on how your U-235 production is doing. It works okay if you start from a full belt to begin with, but it isn't really properly a buffer, because if your fuel production...

Re: All the different ways to increase the efficiency of a nuclear power plant

If you have no fuel cell available and the output inserter tries to trigger the input inserter, the input insertion will fail and not recover until the player intervenes and manually handloads either a fresh or spent fuel cell into the reactor. To get to that point, you need to leave the power stat...

Land Mines plus bots are pretty good defense bots. They do get clipped though, now and then.
And they don't mix with flamethrowers.

(And why is there no flame-breathing smiley?)

Re: Anyone standardizing on very long trains?

Btw, stackers are evil, imho. If a train isn’t loading, unloading or traveling to a place to do so, it’s not really being very productive. Best and really only place to buffer is inside an assembly / furnace. Even then, you want to keep buffers as small as possible. Factorio is all about JIT. Well,...

Re: All the different ways to increase the efficiency of a nuclear power plant

To add to farcast conditions, i think it also depend on how the rest of the electric network look like, if you are using a mix of energy including solar and classic fuel burning, a shut-down of the nuke plant, due to not having enough fuel to keep the sync wouldn't lead to a total black-out, and ma...

Re: All the different ways to increase the efficiency of a nuclear power plant

I have had fuel cell production be interrupted because someone depowered the assembler, because the iron line got cut, because kovarex got cut, because a logistics chest got configured poorly, because someone deadlocked an intersection, etc. :v As farcast said: 'different experience'. 'Someone' pre...

Re: All the different ways to increase the efficiency of a nuclear power plant

I suppose it depends on how often you either can't or won't build build enough fuel cell production for your reactors to decide if waiting for fuel is worth the added complexity. In my experience, never, so that's why I'm against it. Others might have a different experience. There does seem to be a...

Re: All the different ways to automate a nuclear power plant

Make that five more than you need for synchronous insertion with steam monitoring. I'm not sure how you'd do a combinator-free regulated insertion? I'd be interested in seeing the logic. Combinator-free steam control for a limited-capacity reactor is simple, but without some form of memory I don't ...

Re: All the different ways to automate a nuclear power plant

All the control logic cost just 5 combinators. That's four combinators more than you need for synchronous insertion, and three more than you need for synchronous insertion with guaranteed available cells or steam monitoring. Two and a half (counting a CC as a half) if you want both. :) Make that fi...

For incoming, I use all 12 inserter spots, each pulling in 4 different items via underground belts and 2 red inserters each, for a total of 48. I have done a belt-fed munitions train, but that didn't use combinators, just explicit stack limits inside the railway wagon. For outgoing, I use 40 differ...

Re: All the different ways to automate a nuclear power plant

You're forgetting heat pipes and unfuled reactors as a heat-storage method. They are lossless but not directly measurable. Personally I've never seen a large scale design using this approach but I'm sure they must be out there. ... It is because the math says, that reactors are incredibly eypensive...

Re: All the different ways to automate a nuclear power plant

I have to say that when I build a powerplant I always do two important stress-tests: - the first one is to consume 10% of the max power (or less) to let the whole plant cool down, then I push the power draw to 90% (or more) to see if the power plant chokes. - the second test is the same but in reve...
