Re: how do I switch between accumulator and steam/coal based machine?
The simplest way is to have all of your Offshore Pumps (the ones feeding your boilers) wired to one Accumulator. Have the Offshore Pumps set to turn on when A < 20, or w/e your desired set point may be. Accumulator charge higher than 20%, pumps donāt push water to Boilers, and you donāt have any ste...

Re: Is high train braking force better? Not really...
Deceleration is negative acceleration. It is not percentage based of the top or current speed. Acceleration is an increase in speed over time. Gravity on Earth accelerates objects towards the earth at 9.8 meter/sec/sec, aka 9.8 meters/(sec^2). If a train in Factorio is traveling at 200 KPH, and one ...

Re: Is high train braking force better? Not really...
Regardless of how fast a train was going, it wants to come to a complete stop at a Red signal. For the sake of illustration, lets say a train takes 10 track tiles to slow down 10 KPH. If it is traveling at 200 KPH, it will take 200 tiles to hit 0. Thus, it has to reserve that many signals ahead, and...

Re: Bots versus Belts
Many people use balancers just to mix like 32 belts to 32 belts. This way the bottlenecks (belt gaps) get distributed evenly. That does not make very much sense IMO unless you are starving on resources and/or you don't know, which consumer needs what. if you have a production line, which constantly...

Re: What is the optimal gap (and direction) between rails?
I include Large Power Poles within my rail BPās. I use those for alignment. It works rather well; I have yet to have a misalignment with them when using them properly. Outside of offshoots going to and from stations, in particular the stackers, I avoid diagonal rails anyway. Personal preference there.

Re: Way to see what's slowing the game down exactly?
Artillery Range increase can indeed lead to a lot of slowdown. Its not due to the artillery itself, but due to it shooting at (and angering) hordes of biters that want to have a frank discussion about your wonton destruction of their homes. IMO its one tech that should not be unlimited, but instead ...

Re: why is my oil and petroleum production decrease over time?
You don't store it in storage tanks. Pipes already store a small amount of fluid. Also the machines that use fluid store a small amount on their input buffers. Most of the time that's all the buffer you'll ever need. One case where you will want storage tanks is for the outputs of refineries. Refin...

Re: What is the optimal gap (and direction) between rails?
I used to use a 3 train tile gap between my rails (6 tiles). I had a set of functional BPās for it and all. I decided, however, that I wanted to improve my BPās, and that led me to widening the gap slightly, to 4 rail tiles (8 base tiles) between tracks. If I wanted to expand to a 4 track system, I ...

Re: why is my oil and petroleum production decrease over time?
To answer the titular question, something I forgot to do in my previous post ... When you output to a tank, that tank acts as a storage buffer. So you built up a supply of up to 25,000 PG as you were going and placing the other machinery. That supply kept the plastic and sulfur going, but when it go...

Re: why is my oil and petroleum production decrease over time?
Basic Oil Processing (BOP) drinks 100 Crude Oil and spits out 45 Petroleum Gas (PG), every 5 seconds. This means, each BOP refinery drinks 20 crude/second, and produces 9 PG/second. Sulfur drinks 30 PG and 30 water to produce 2 Sulfur, every second. Plastic eats 1 Coal, and drinks 20 PG, to produce ...

Yea. Time, pollution generated, and spammers destroyed add to Evolution.
Pollution absorbed just gives the nest money to buy units for its next attack. Simplest way to look at it.

I designed what I call a āDefense Firebaseā ... it is designed for integration into the rail network (or it was, before I widened my two track system, without updating this BP), contains four Artillery, a whole lot of Lasers, and is surrounded by Walls with some Gates where the train enters and leav...

Regular Inserters if you are upgrading to a Red (or Blue) Belt. Burner Inserters are too slow for Reds or Blues.
Upgrade the Coal to Solid Fuel when you can, though, youāll be able to feed 100 Boilers that way, rather than just 34 that Coal feeds.

Umm ... each train has a unique schedule, right? A train for the Base Copper Unload Station is not going anywhere that it would pick up Iron or Uranium, is it? Assuming that the Base Copper Unload Station is the only station that such a train would want to visit at the base (ignoring where it picks ...

While I have not tried specifically to remove a Radar with a Deconstruction Planner, I have to ask : did you have any kind of filter set for the Planner? If no filter is set, they remove everything (and can remove tiles, too, if thereās nothing else for them to remove). If a filter is set, they will...

Re: Using combinators to control trains / stations
Personally, under those circumstances as described in the op, I would have the four drop off stations have their own individual names, and their own sets of three trains. Have the trains sit at the drop off station until empty, and have the pickup locations turn on when there is enough ore to fill a...

Re: Rant about universal strategies (main busses)
Personally, Iāll set up my āmain baseā with a bus. It will contain my mall as well as the red, green, grey, blue, purple, yellow science production to get me through those techs. Iāll then start making train-fed outposts to produce Rocket Fuel (and other crude oil derived products, such as Batteries...

Re: Roboport Spam
Roboport range increase tech would not be a good thing, IMO. Bots work best in smaller, discrete networks. Yes, a factory-spanning network can work, it will not work very effectively, as bots spend more time traveling from one end to the other to accomplish jobs. Smaller networks force the bots to f...

Re: Train Stacker weird behavior
Donāt expect this to fix your issue, but I tend to put Chain Signals at the end of every parking space in a stacker. I then have Rail Signals at the end of where the train parked at the Station will be. This allows me to have multiple Stations fed by the same stacker. That bit of unasked for advice ...
