how does enemy expansion work?

I have my entire base walled off with dbl thick layer of walls and turrets closely lining the whole wall. Can someone explain why expansion chunks are shown inside my walls in the yellow regions? Id figure they couldnt expand there if they have no path to reach there

getting an error when starting the game up now. looks like an error in petrochem Did you also update to the latest refining? refining is vers 0.6.4, did check for updates and everything i have is updated Thats odd.
