2: I guess they decided they needed barrels, but that being able to barrel everything would be a bit too much with having 6 extra items and such.

You can use electric pumps to move liquids around and drain containers/systems, if that helps.

I take down the power lines feeding them. I have them positioned so that I just need to plonk one pole down to power 1 or 2, and then another for each extra 2.

Nice work! And yes, oil processing will stop if one of the fractions can't be drained out of the refinery. You can turn all oil types into solid fuel if you want (works like coal and wood) and once you've researched advanced oil processing you can produce more petroleum gas and also crack the heavie...

You can try using pumps and stuff so that a tank can't empty, because the cracking wills top if the plant can't drain.
There might be other ways but I just manually tweak the numbers of active cracking plants.
If there's no system now, there will be one day! Oil is still a relatively new feature.

There was a big bug in 10.4, but it was fixed in days, and 10.6 has been out for a week and not caused me any problems.
You could always download a separate copy of Factorio in the latest version.

Roads would be a cool thing. At the moment you can use turbo belts to speed up cars a bit (and have the edge ones pointing inwards to keep you on the road) but it's ridiculously expensive and you might as well use trains or a bunch of exoskeletons. I'm itching to see a screenshot of the power menu, I use solar and steam all the time. I've been meaning to make a video about interpreting the power graphs for ages.

So as soon as you do it, all of the engines shut off and everything starts running slowly? What happens if you do it at night, does the entire factory die altogether?

What resolution is this 27 inch display? And is it set to be a copy or an extension of the laptop screen?
If you had Factorio set to fullscreen mode it might lead it to being confused by multiple screens. Alternately it could be that the resolution is too low or something on this new display.

Yes, if you haven't enabled experimental updates you'll still be in 0.9.8 which is from before it was implemented.
