The normal miner changes to a uranium miner if you put it on top of uranium, otherwise it doesn't.

Re: Friday Facts #184 - Five years of Factorio

The anti-griefing measures definitely need the concept of ownership to operate properly. Just actions isn't enough on a huge map like that, without any kind of indication of what players are actually doing. If someone comes in and builds loads of things, not being able to deconstruct is just as anno...

Re: how do YOU manage barrels of oil?

I have a setup close to the pictured one, where the barrels are built for as long as there's an empty space on a short run of belt that heads towards the train. But once the oil dies down, that gives you a glut of barrels. So I have a series of chests - the first is just a buffer. It fills and then ...

Surely the word customers, in itself, gives him away?

These people aren't customers. They haven't paid a penny to the creators of Factorio. They've paid them to a scam artist selling something that's not theirs to sell.

Re: Friday Facts #175 - Programmable Speaker

On the network side, does it happen if you send packets that are "encrypted" (XOR'd would do as an example)? Either there's a very specific packet size that's being blocked, or a very specific packet content. Adding a random byte solves both, but if you were to just scramble to data slight...

Re: To easy

Wall off an area, early in the game. You are not allowed to build outside that wall. You can't turret-creep or gather resources or use trains or anything. The only thing you can do is go outside (in a car/tank or on your own) to collect alien eggs. Get to launching the rocket. I guarantee it's possi...

Re: Friday Facts #172 - Blending and Rendering

Top bit too techy - I've read OpenGL Superbible back-to-front a thousand times and understand it, but I'm a mathematician. Summary for those not mathematical: By pre-calculating some of the graphics transparency, we can speed up overlapping images rendering on screen, and make them reinforce (flame ...

Re: [Windows] The death of Win32 and 32-bit itself.

Programs have been able to make use of more than 4Gb for ages. Computers have been coming with more than 4Gb by default for ages. Processors have been 64-bit capable for ages. Operating systems have been 64-bit for ages. It's really been longer coming than it should ever have been. Sure, it's a pain...

Re: Friday Facts #166 - Combat Revisit

Combat needs to be more automated, I agree. I play on the default settings and I don't go in for huge factories, which I imagine the majority of new / casual gamers who find it on Steam don't either. I wall off an area. I have to wall off because though you have to have SOME challenge, I hate the th...

I do that, and have auto-trash for wood turned on.

I also have the chest be a requester chest which also pulls in anything else flammable, too, e.g. wooden boxes etc. at the start.

Can I throw in my two-penneth on optimisation? The loading screen. I have a laptop with an SSD and it takes 10-15 seconds to get to the menu. Given that there are no credits, or unskippable logos or any other tripe, it's probably one of the longest loading screens I've ever seen. Can we not load wha...

Re: Server setup and anti-griefing

Anything relying on reloading saves is just losing work, albeit less, and needs admin intervention. I need something more automatic. My experience was that myself and a couple of guys set up a factory that was self-defending. One guy came in, spent about 20 minutes in there, then shot everyone and h...

Server setup and anti-griefing

Hi, I set up public servers for almost every game I get into. Factorio, basic without mods, seems to just be a grief-invitation. People come in, rip up all the buildings and tracks and then attack the other players. Given the time-investment in this, that's a huge negative. What is the standard setu...

Re: Friday Facts #159 - Research revolution

Science packs are unbalanced, as stated. I often get bored between green and blue with all the setup required to continue. And blue always suffers, in my setups. Purple - no problem, just get to the point you can take out a nest and you're forever covered. I posited an idea on the Steam forums to do...

Re: Friday facts #158 - The end of the 32 bit era

Oh. And I throw out dozens of machines a year. Those machines have all been 64-bit capable for many years. But, literally, no-one will take them off my hands except WEEE-registered recycling companies who CHARGE ME to take them away. So if you're desperately poor and can't afford a 64-bit machine at...

Re: Friday facts #158 - The end of the 32 bit era

I manage and deploy systems for a living. I haven't deployed 32-bit Windows for nearly 10 years now. 32-bit is dead. All your hardware nowadays will support 64-bit, the OS might not but there's no need to stay on 32-bit OS. Don't forget - on a 32-bit OS or processor you can NEVER use more than 4Gb f...
