An idea to make them more useful would be to allow coal burners (just them) able to be loaded directly from a belt pointing in their direction, then you can automate on coal power alone.

Personally I hate when devs make first class and second class citizen by creating a restricted test group. I think you can fetch some of the path finding code (or just ideas) out of spring rts game engine, already supports multi level path caches, dynamic terrain, basic jam resolution and is proven to be quite fast - games with thousands of units are common.

One of the fn keys turns down terrai. Texture detailing.
Wont help for the huge aliens pathfinding to your base..


Probably they can start caching most of the paths as they are the same for most waves and aliens
