sadly, I haven't come around to trying one or the other approach: shortly after posting the question I decided to start over from scratch and am still far from launching the first rocket. It's only a question of time until I have to look at that blueprint again, though.

So I've planned a bit of factory and now I'd like to see if it works as expected. With belt based production, you can easily see if a belt is full or not (that's not the whole story, of course, but bear with me for a moment) but I'm trying bots and it's pretty hard to spot if an assembly machine run...

Gun turrets are very strong with green ammo. They probably alone deal enough damage to survive endgame waves. Indeed they do. I've tried in the meantime, and their stopping power is ridiculous. My workaround for the time being: a filter inserter and reading the stack inserter's hand contents. If there's less than a handful, the stack inserter is presumably stuck and the filter inserter removes the item in question, one at a time, into a provider chest. It seems to me the question you were really asking is ... when making (for example) Rocket Control Units, do you just train in Speed Module 1’s and Blue Circuits, or do you train in the Iron Ore, Copper Ore, Coal, and Crude Oil, and make every intermediary product to output the Rocket Control Units...
