Roughly 1.5 boilers per steam engine seems to be a good ratio. So for 3 boilers, you can safely put 2 steam engines.

I always make solid fuel from my light oil, which has no recipe apart from being cracked to heavy oil or petroleum. Never had a problem with oil running out or not having enough oil for my other products.

Toward endgame coal gets more and more useless. When in oil industry you can make light oils, heavy oils and even the petroleum gas into solid fuel making coal useless except for making plastics and explosives.

Cool mod. :) But I think the amount of science packs needed should be changed. Obviously science pack 1 is easier to make than science pack 2 or 3, so should be more. :) Same for science pack 2.

It doesn't count the car inventory (it should). If you've got everything you need, you just need to get in the car with the Enter key to finish the mission(needs to be more obvious, yeah.)

You're meant to follow the instructions in the objectives. First one is to research automation(the first research on your list that isn't done) after that you will have access to science packs 2(it is scripted into the level to unlock at that point) Also, the x50 on that screen refers to everything ...

I did. :P I now only use coal for certain recipes that require it (ie plastic bars, explosives)

Definitely! Solid fuel actually has a higher burn value than coal, so burns a lot slower. It's also good for getting rid of light oil, as you'll find that storage fills up quickly for that and you need to do something with it otherwise your oil industry will stop working.
