Update:
The nuking and re-building approach worked. Make sure to copy the server-settings.json though.
Unsatisfactory, but I guess that's sometimes the solution.

Sounds to me like the game got corrupted during update and asks you to reinstall.Cannot load base mod version 2.0.72 with game version 2.0.73. Update probably failed, please download the game again.

I have trouble upgrading my headless server to 2.0.73. The last two stable upgrades worked like a charm, no problems there.
The server is running Debian 12, kernel 6.17.4.
To update the server, located at /opt/factorio , I performed the following steps:

Update: Tried the exact same setup on another machine and it ran flawlessly. It's just as you've said that it's most likely a hardware issue rather than something wrong with the Factorio engine.

To give an update; after extensive memory testing and voltage adjustments, I think I got everything fairly stable. Now running at 5200 mhz on the memory which it was designed for. There should be an update 2.0.55 to 2.0.57, my guess is that it is missing for non headless linux or just gog in general.

Started headless server on a Debian 6.1.128-1 server. 3 players join and start playing, between 20 - 40 mins later the modal "Server has left the game" appears and all players are kicked.

I have made available an update package that goes from 2.0.55 directly to 2.0.57, and verified it works with factorio-updater, so there shouldn't be any more problems.

Probably because the the 2.0.56 package was malformed and they pulled it from the release channel. You'll have to manually update to 2.0.57 from whatever version you are on now.
