This theme involves core game concepts.
Complex and slow construction can be fun, but instant and free construction provides much more creative freedom. And that is the way of Factorio. It is a basic concept laid the foundation of the game and it cannot be changed, at least in vanilla.

A small train is fine too.

Vehicles automatically slide along belts, have large inventories, and inserters can interact with them. Take advantage of this to move vast quantities of material, one car at a time.

What's the benefit of this other than roleplaying?
Fluids are much more awkward to handle than items and don't even get me started on barreling.
Also the "gap" you "bridge" between solid fuel and coal is a 20% bump on the floor.
This is a pure gimmick.
