Re: Friday Facts #238 - The GUI update (Part II)

Use "Enqueue" instead of "Queue". The former is always a verb.

Re: Semi-physical analysis on how belt compressing should work

Both diagrams show the same thing. The only difference is the machine doing the pushing (inserter vs belt) and the dimension along which the object is being pushed (x/y vs. z). Why should the belt be able to push items back any more forcefully than the inserter? The inserter actually runs on power s...

Umm ... ok... it seemed like the same problem to me. i thought the devs might want more information on a bug report

Re: [0.16.3] 0.5 FPS after loading game

My game runs at 60FPS consistently, except for a span of about 10 seconds immediately after a save. Then I get a reported 45 fps which is really a headache-inducing stutter between 30 and 60. This is on a brand new map with default settings. My specs & settings: CPU: i7-6700K 4GHz RAM: 16 GB DDR...

Re: Read keyboard layout from system

I could be wrong, but it seems they could use this SDL lib just for translating the scan codes even if they don't use it for the actual input handling. The scan codes come from the hardware so they'll be the same in either case. Alternatively, since SDL is under zlib license, they can copy whatever ...

Read keyboard layout from system

There are APIs to translate scan codes between QWERTY and whatever the system layout is set to. This means you can keep the physical layout of keybindings the same and just display a different name to the user. E.g. https://wiki.libsdl.org/CategoryKeyboard Non-QWERTY users would never have to change...

Choose what settings & saves sync to steam cloud

Switching between windows & linux breaks keybindings because they're synced to the steam butt even though they're incompatible between systems. Since you've said this is not being fixed then you should allow us to disable syncing of key bindings. For that matter, every settings page should have ...

Re: [0.13.10] - Some controls are not cross-compatible

Exactly. If you're not going to make them compatible then at the very least they shouldn't get broken every time we switch systems.

Re: [0.13.10] - Some controls are not cross-compatible

What about a toggle to store keyboard shortcuts locally instead of to the steam cloud?

The problem isn't that the bindings are different, it's that they get overwritten when switching between systems.

Re: [0.13.10] - Some controls are not cross-compatible

I'm now on 0.14.9 and still having this issue. Because I'm on Dvorak, the positions of QWE and Z are apostrophe, comma, period, and semicolon, respectively. On Windows these show up as KEY69, KEY72, KEY73, and KEY68. On linux they show up as APOSTROPHE, COMMA, PERIOD, and SEMICOLON. Besides regular ...

Re: Inconsistent power output with steam engines

My best guess at this point is that there are periodic blips where power production seems to be less than max, but those blips line up with the power UI refreshing. So the production may be 40.8 most of the time (the theoretical maximum) but the UI is displaying 40 with an occasional blip up to 40.8...

Re: Inconsistent power output with steam engines

Please consider moving this back out of "not a bug" Yes, it does seem to be a flow issue, but the issue is not due to anything I constructed. Attempts to increase the flow of a single line seems to change the power output for a whole set of lines, even when that change decreases the overal...

Re: Getting extra power from steam engines

I agree it's a flow issue, but I still think there is something wrong with the behavior. If I go back to the 2-28-20 setup and put 4 pumps on one of the boiler outputs, the power output does tend to stay around 40.7. However, doing the same with any of the other lines does not result in a similar in...

Re: Getting extra power from steam engines

I will try that. For what it's worth, though, the end boilers are all have full production bars and > 1 water And again, I only get the full increase in power if I leave boilers in some of the lines. If it was a universal flow issue, then turning them all into 2-26-20 should not result in a decrease.

Re: Getting extra power from steam engines

Actually, that still doesn't quite make sense. I have 4 lines of 2-28-20 producing pretty much exactly 40 MW (with occasional blips to 40.8). These are completely independent lines, with no water crossing paths. If I turn any two of them into 2-26-20 lines, the total power output increases to steady...

Loewchen wrote:This is not enough for it to be a bug, chances are the limiting factor is water throughput and not heating power so removing boiler would increase the power output.
You're right. I was under the mistaken impression that boilers output 500 KW. Seems they're 510 instead.

Re: Getting extra power from steam engines

Actually, you don't need to alternate the removed boilers. If I make two of the lines 2-26-20 and the other two lines 2-28-20, I get the same 40.6 MW as having all 2-27-20s

Here's a screenshot with the setup and the power display:

Inconsistent power output with steam engines

Discovered here: https://www.reddit.com/r/factorio/comments/4zn2q2/the_211420_feed_20_steam_engines_with_2_boiler/d6xulx4 Set up: 8 water pumps. Each pump feeds into 14 boilers. The outputs of two boiler lines are combined directly into pipes. An underground pipe connects that to a line of 20 steam ...
