A bit more detail about the Changelog version of this issue:

- That error comes after the update is downloaded
- Afterwards, the changelog is for 0.12.10
- I then tried to start a new game and got some sort of lua error and coulsn't play. Sadly, I forgot to copy the exact message before deleting ...

I'm getting a different error auto-updating from 0.12.9 to 0.12.10 (OS X 10.9.5):

Update failed:
File /Applications/Games/factorio.app/Contents/data/changelog.txt has unexpected content

I don't have any mods installed.

I did a bit more testing today, and noticed it only happens when "video memory" is (also?) set to "low".

I've updated the title and content of the main post accordingly.

(The good news is I can see the proper range of electric poles with "All" video memory now, and it's not choppy -- but my ...

This was also an issue in 0.12.0, and I have no idea how far back. I only just started playing on this computer and it's too choppy even on "Low" graphics.
