I've waited hours in the past. However, I just got done playing a session with mods and it exited fine this time, so it isn't reproducible with mods 100% of the time.

I also have this issue on Steam Linux. I don't remember having it pre-Steam. It seems to be easier to trigger if you have Bob's Mods installed; however, I have noticed it occasionally without any mods.
