It would be more useful to request the satellite to constantly monitor the specified area just like radar does. Just assume we are located somewhere near equator and the satellite is at the geostationary orbit - then it will be quite believable.

I could imagine that the satellite is currently not sent into an orbit, but off and away on an eternal journey into space and it probably has a limited amount of energy to work with.
