I'm happy to report that 0.16.18 has resolved the issue and I'm now able to open the game and play again.

I'm having the same issue. (nearly identical error message running 0.16.17 on mac through steam.)
I was only able to get into the game by reverting to 0.16.16.
Has anyone figured out how to get the game working in 0.16.17?
