Re: Friday Facts #260 - New fluid system

Physicist here. I happened to bring up the wonky fluid behaviour about a year ago, but it didnโ€™t seem to be a high priority at the time. Back then I came up with some alternative algorithms and ran some simulations in an Android app I hacked together for this purpose (can send APK+source if interes...

Re: Friday Facts #260 - New fluid system

Sources and drains: A source would just impose a positive pressure, and a drain would be a point of zero pressure. Although I like your model a lot, I think I disagree with this part. Let's say you have a high pressure in your water pipes in your house. Open your faucet valve in your kitchen. The p...

Re: Friday Facts #260 - New fluid system

I just want to add something about the analogy fluid-electricity: You naturally get a maximum throughput in your network if your sources have a maximum pressure: If you look at this wikipedia article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hagen%E2%80%93Poiseuille_equation#Equation You can see that the flow ...

Re: Fixing the power bars.

While I agree that the 3 powers (with the right sign) should add up to zero making some information redundant, I have the feeling the 3 are equally important. So I'm not sure one should be discarded. Maybe a matter of taste here... However, I would say that the maximum of the consumption bar (named ...

Re: Fixing the power bars.

I really like the corrected maximum of the bars. About the colors, I'm not sure what a good scheme would be (when the should be red or yellow). This part needs some thoughts. I would add 2 things: the signed power of the accumulators, and the drain consumption (no numerical value for this one). powe...

Re: Friday Facts #225 - Bots versus belts (part 2)

Who would go through the trouble of setting up a bot logistics network including the research to automate building a tank. ?? It was just an example, but I think on multiplayer, one could autocraft tanks for new comers, my other examples might be more relevant. EDIT: But that's also the point of bo...

Re: Friday Facts #225 - Bots versus belts (part 2)

I just don't see why any low throughput option should be of interest. If the player orders 1000 belts, I want to see high throughput. Or are we talking about placeable items like splitters? Such items tend to need low throughput in average. But the peak throughput is often also very high. Generally...

Re: Friday Facts #225 - Bots versus belts (part 2)

That's funny and sad how several pages of interesting discussion that was getting somewhere were completely wiped out by new people on this topic who didn't read and/or didn't even consider that previous posts would already have interesting ideas. This is an endless cycle, and this is probably not t...

Re: Friday Facts #225 - Bots versus belts (part 2)

Here is a neat solution for Bot nerf that won't upset much people: Make default bot speed and charge time significalntly worse. Add a super expensive infinite research afrer rocket launch for charge time. During the main game bots will be balanced so happy fun belt times. At megabase 1 rocket/minut...

Re: Friday Facts #225 - Bots versus belts (part 2)

The problem is that it works exactly like barreling... which is tedious (as noted in the FFF). A better alternative, IMO, is auto create/destroy the empties... and have mk3 assemblers handle the pack/unpack automatically. This could be done without any new recipes, so the crafting menus don't get b...

Re: Friday Facts #225 - Bots versus belts (part 2)

So it seems to me that the real problem is that belts and logibots are trying to fill the same niche. Sort distance high throughput transport of items. That's why I suggested few posts ago to nerf only the high throughput part the bot networks. Bots are much easier to use and set up, so they are re...

Re: Friday Facts #225 - Bots versus belts (part 2)

I've read the last few pages of this thread and several things seem to come back regularly. So let me sum the ideas and bring some extra stuff. TL;DR 4 possibilities (that could be combined): Nerf bots: it should be an intuitive mechanic like traffic jams (for example) make bots funnier: it could re...

Re: Friday Facts #225 - Bots versus belts (part 2)

I would like to throw some ideas into the wild: I really think that belts could be improved in term of usability, but don't really have to have a higher throughput. In that respect, this modified splitter looks great with configurable priorities. However, I don't think that filtering should be handl...
