For me this had nothing to do with keypresses - see viewtopic.php?f=47&t=72733 for a simple repro (was marked as duplicate).

[kovarex] [0.17.52] Crash on save: connection.rail->segment->hasSignal(this) was not true
This kept crashing my modded save when trying to save after building out a train stacker.
I have isolated the issue in a vanilla sandbox.
Having a signal in either of the two positions is fine, but if both are placed the game crashes if you try to save.
