It seems to me that the idea would be to reserve all of the blocks you might be able to travel in given the speed that you are traveling at, assuming you brake at full speed (Maybe give a half second reaction time?). That doesn't seem like it would affect things significantly, and I think given the ...

So does that mean that if you are driving a train manually and don't want to get run into, you have to be paying attention to trains from all around you? It seems a bit strange, I would suspect that being run in to when driving manually would be something people would want to avoid. Granted this is ...

The question becomes is it more likely that someone would do something intentionally, or that they would accidentally include inserters and go crazy trying to figure out what was going on. I could see a case for either case, but if anything, this seems to be something that is rarely if ever used ...

This was made in to a mod, Ghost Copier, that does implement this functionality, but I still think it would be good for the main game.

I had a similar thought with crafting. In fact, in many instance it might make more sense to pull from the Trash slots before pulling from the regular inventory slots. It makes sense for crafting and for dumping stuff, which are the two more common reasons why people want to dump stuff, so... Hmmm...

There are times where you temporarily want to not autotrash something. The common occurrence is you have a lot of ore, but are at a smelter, and want to dump the ore in to the smelters and not just have it be trashed. There are 2 things that I can think of that could dramatically improve this ...
