Re: Friday Facts #333 - Terrain scrolling

This is how the NES did it! this way scrolling only took writing like 80 bytes per frame at most instead of a whole kilobyte.

Re: Friday Facts #314 - 0.17 stable

The talk of inconvenience making gameplay more interesting actually made me think of landfill and cliff explosives: it's way more interesting to try to arrange your base when there's Stuff In The Way.

[0.17.5] migrated campaign level ends up with very narrow right sidebar

I was playing the Arrival campaign yesterday on 0.17.4, loaded it up on 0.17.5, this happened: https://i.imgur.com/MAInWay.jpg Note the comically narrow box that the research and minimap are stuffed into. Nothing else seems to be affected this way. This seems to happen with all my 0.17.4 campaign sa...

Re: Friday Facts #265 - Nomenclature & Steam networking

I can think of three things that come in 7 colors/flavors: Science packs (1, 2, 3, production, military, high tech, space) Inserters (burner, regular, long handed, fast, filter, stack, stack filter) Throwable items aka capsules (grenade, cluster grenade, poison capsule, slowdown capsule, defender ca...

Re: Circuit Network possible make something like requester chest

You can detect loads in a circuit-connected chest, and send that data towards the factory: if the chest feeding your turret has, say, less than 100 magazines left, activate an inserter that pulls from another chest closer to the center. These can cascade, with forks, back to your factory.

Re: 0.15.0—Boiler to Steam Engine Ratio??

At this rate, you need 9 (exactly) coal/second coming in to a single pump's power station, requiring (a little under) 18 standard electric mining drills to keep it fed. Which is rather a bit more than the, uh, 4 or so you needed in 0.14. Although that one pump is feeding 40 generators instead of 10...

Re: 0.15.0—Boiler to Steam Engine Ratio??

From the data: Water's specific heat is 0.2 kJ / (°C unit). (this suggests that 1 unit of water is approximately 48 grams) the boiler's power is 1.8 MW. The target temperature for the boiler is 165. Water starts at 15 degrees. The steam engine can use up to 30 units of steam per second. The shorelin...

Re: Friday Facts #179 - New resource graphics & concrete

The new ores really look great, but will it make miner-placing more difficult because the boundaries of an ore-patch are harder to spot? One way I can envision making it easier and still keeping the pretty is, when you are holding a drill for placement, to tint ore-filled squares according to their...

"Wait, you can burn wood!?"

also the realization that full automation really does need only one tech to get started; I used to grind up a whole bunch before even starting on proper automation architecture.

I like the loader only if it looks like it picks up the chest and shakes it to get things out.

Re: Quickbar shortcut doesn't work

I too am getting this error. Same OS and game version. Some more minutiae: US keyboard layout, with a non-Apple keyboard, with alt and winkey mapped to command and option respectively. Setting the key bindings through the options works: I can set a binding to say it will respond to "1" eas...
