Making it a late-game option I think works best. Treat alien artifacts as a passive way of learning about the biters, and once enough are collected the ability to communicate with them opens up. I have 600 plastic bars in one provider chest and 150 batteries in another. Both are set to bring the contents to requester chests that are pretty much constantly empty.

I just got to logistics robots for the first time and am having trouble with them. I have about 20 of them in the roboport and I am trying to move items across my base.
