Re: Friday Facts #245 - Campaign concept
Was late to the game (0.15/0.16?). I think I played only two games without aliens (first one without realising that I was on an island until I got to the last science... which was blue at the time I think, the second to try out Bob's mods etc.) Have sent any number of rockets. Have almost all the ac...

"minutes=__1__ __plural_for_parameter_1__[1]__minut__[ends in 01-19]__minute__[rest]__de minute__" Urgh. Never thought about proper GNU gettext, which is basically designed with this kind of thing in mind and then people can just use a compatible translation program and send you a translat...

Isn't "offensive programming" when you can't find the f***ing, sh***y, b*****d bug that's c***king everything up?

As a programmer, I could never get on with Allegro. It's history is older than SDL (I believe, I can't be bothered to Google) but it was always something that people ended up ripping out later on. SDL, however, has always served me well and since 1.3/2.0 where OpenGL was an integrated component it's...

0.16 crash
0.16 crashes-on-load for me, at loading sprites, 89%.
The logs and dump are attached.
0.15 ran fine for me unless I had literally thousands-of-roboport-port-range long maps exposed.

Re: Friday Facts #221 - 0.16 is out
Aw. 0.16 just crashes on the loading screen for me. The only time I ever had a problem on 0.15 was with huge stupendous bases (e.g. 1000 roboport-ranges tall, etc.), but that was always in-game or when loading in the save after a long session. This is just... Loading sprites, 89%, crash. Off to file...

Re: I wish I had the money.
I always judge on "price per hour". As far as I'm concerned, the value of Factorio is much greater than anything like GTA (which I played, completed, deleted), or most other things on Steam. Some games are worth lots for only a few hours of content (e.g. Half-Life 2 when it first come out)...

Re: Friday Facts #215 - Multithreading issues
Are we talking: list of train tracks list of trains list of stations list of belts list of electric poles list of electric networks Each holding their own contiguous memory list of items, but separate (so they don't reference each other)? Such that the belt-thread can pull in the list of all belts i...

Where are you going to put all the byproducts of making/storing/using billions of copper wires?
I think you'd run out of RAM before your machine uptime mattered.

Re: Friday Facts #210 - Circuit connector module implementation
Think we really need an expensive "wireless radio circuit" instead of so many wires all over the place. Stick it on a red/green wire and it can transmit it to any wireless radio circuit in range, rather than having to convert to logistics networks or cable everything in sight. Make a "...

Re: Belts, how far is too far?
Always blueprint train tracks with the cheapest wooden pylons in - they are so cheap its ridiculous and your blueprints will take out a load of trees along the way to pay for them anyway. That way, your power network becomes as route-redundant as your train network too, and you have power to all rem...

Re: Splitting up robotic networks
Yeah, you don't have much choice. I have a line that's 1000-roboport-areas long, and it takes about 15 minutes for a robot to traverse it. It still works, robots are still generally around in the intermediate ports to do things like repairs and keep the line safe, but delivery of materials from one ...

Re: float point and why it is used in factorio
And so long as the float library used is consistent across platforms, it won't be the cause of any kinds of miscalculations (to be honest, doesn't the server do it all for everyone anyway?). If handling floats was as unreliable as you suggest, almost nothing from browser div tags to any online game ...

Re: Extreme Ribbon World
You're gonna need a lot of all the three tunnel belts. Get used to nesting them on the same row! Er.. actually, my core strategem going in is to completely avoid belts, relying instead --when I'm forced to-- on short-range bot work to do stuff like supplying the rocket. Is it going to be viable to ...

Re: Friday Facts #206 - Workflow optimisation
Where does the time spent on that compile optimisation appear on the classic XKCD chart?: https://xkcd.com/1205/ And the more junk like boost that you throw in (and I imagine much of that is spent compiling code that's later discarded because it's not actually used) the worse it will be. I'm more su...

Rather than pretend that children don't see, hear, repeat and use such words, try this. Educate your child what the word means, punish if they use it out of context or unnecessarily for effect (i.e. every other word to look big in front of their friends) To be honest, as far as my parenting goes, th...

Re: Friday Facts #205 - Teaching the things that everybody knows
I have a couple of thousand hours. Trains / rails - I use them, but usually only when I've got a complete mini-base up and running (i.e. can already make anything I like, get enough science etc. to launch rocket, etc.). They are only useful if you don't encapsulate enough resources, or you're delibe...
