This issue still (randomly) occurs in 0.16.1 (I have 12GB of RAM - Windows 10 uses 2GB).

Your computer ran out of memory. For 0.16.1 I changed limit for parallel loading of high resolution sprites to 12 GB RAM to reduce chance of this happening.

I don't know your code of course, and I'm hampered because my experience is C not C++. Depending on the list and the type of removals, I'd wonder if you really need to delete them or can just mark them inactive.
