I'm using this workaround for now (on windows 7)
1. find and try to install your required mod from the mod portal
2. when it crashes to desktop go into %appdata%/Factorio/temp
3. move the zip file for your mod to %appdata%/Factorio/mods
4. UNPACK the zip file into a folder of THE SAME NAME still ...
