Another solution I can think of is simply the ability to enter your own channel names—just like train station names

In Factorio 2.1, the new channel selection interface for radar selectors is amazing.

I would like to have a toggle or an extra field in the channel configuration UI that allows the channel to have a signal value instead of just a raw channel ID.
