Think I realized what it is: I had the train visualization length set to 10. Setting it to 4 and trying again, hovering / placing signals in those same spots, did not cause a crash. Yes, seems I can reproduce it by loading, selecting a standard rail signal, and hovering over an open slot (not placing anything) on any of the inner lanes, leading out of the roundabout. Hovering the signal on other parts of the intersection doesn't seem to cause a crash, but any of these places do...

Reloading from the autosave, it seems to happen when I go to place a signal on the circular 4-way rail intersection that I load in next to. Just happened twice, once pretty immediately after loading the save, and again after waiting 5 minutes or so, not doing anything.

This is actually technically unnecessary for the following reason: The number of Empty Barrels that a station has room to receive from a train unloading will be at least as many as the number of Barrels it has filled since the last train visited it.
