But then what does "Absorbed per damaged tree:" do then? I thought this was the way pollution got absorbed by trees. When polution gets too high it can damage trees. You probably won't notice this if you clear the trees around your factory as there may not be any trees left in chunks wher...

If you personally don't like the pollution mechanics, then you can effectively disable them using the advanced settings when creating a map.
I doubt the default game balance will be changed based on your objection, especially when you have the option to customise it to your liking.

You have to have no steam engine production whatsoever (not just no steam engines currently) within a full hour of solar panels producing 10GJ, iirc. My nukes so far have killed all behemoth biters in its radius (though I have researched rocket damage up to ~4000 space science requirement). From what I read here, isn't that supposed to happen? I am guessing that the OP read the specs of the nuke and posted without testing it in actual game play....

From what I can tell it is always better to build more labs than to research Lab Efficiency. Have I missed something? Researching Lab Efficiency 1 would require 100 Red+Green Science packs.
