I ended up uninstalling steam itself (kept game files) and redownloading it through the steam installer, then it worked great! Again tysm.

I believe for this error message to be shown the game must have been able to create a log file, so you might be looking in the wrong location.

Both the current and old log file are dated to some time in 2021, so not sure where another one would be?
