Re: Factorio is coming to Nintendo Switch™

Currently the controller support is optimized for and built around the Nintendo Switch system, the Joy-Con™ controllers, and their features. If we emulate the game on the SteamDeck the controller should be the same, right? That's a rather round-about way to add controller support. :? Considering th...

Re: Factorio is coming to Nintendo Switch™

I suppose the biggest question I have is, why put it on the weakest dedicated game platform? I would have thought that with built in mouse/keyboard support that either of the other two big platforms, both of which are stronger and more capable platforms, would have made more sense to port to? Refer...

Re: Factorio is coming to Nintendo Switch™

Tbh, while I am really happy for the team, and especially for Twinsen, that must have been a great and entertaining challenge, I am disappointed. For years we hear "Arm will not be optimised for, there will be no arm builds", because "Determinism, weak systems, yada yada" and ye...

Re: Friday Facts #216 - Paving a path for the GUI update

I kinda wanted to write this for 212, but never really got around to it. That said, this blog post is similar, so I'd like to say it. I'd like to encourage the developers not to turn the UI into something akin to "everything is a button." This is one of the things that made early versions ...

Re: Friday facts #158 - The end of the 32 bit era

Oh well, I guess thanks to the help of some forum members, I am gonna have a talk with the kind person who once set up my PC. Side note? If I install WinXP64 over WinXP32, will I keep all my files? If you're going to take the plunge, then I suggest Windows 7 or Windows 10 (or Linux). Might as well ...

Re: Friday facts #158 - The end of the 32 bit era

I'm pretty sure most of the remaining 32 bit holdouts are likely because of Windows XP (which had a 64 bit version, but it was poorly supported so most people stuck to 32 bit), or because they started with Windows XP / 32 bit and kept on the 32 bit path while upgrading to more recent OSes. Switching...

Re: Friday Facts #150 - New Terrain Experiments

To eat CPU or not to eat CPU Because of the way it was written initially, the loop would eat up 100% of one CPU core. While it was quickly fixed for the headless server, our office was divided into two camps that would argue whether the main game should use as much CPU as possible to squeeze the be...

Re: Black border around video when recording?

Fraps shouldn't add black borders - have you tried playing the files Fraps creates directly, in full screen? Before any editing or rendering?

Re: Pirating as a 'demo'. Your opinions?

Yup, I'v set up a system where I'm not at the mercy to do whatever the creator and distributors of a product want me to do. I get to decide what I want to do. Because it's all about you, right? The entire world revolves around you personally. Unfortunately, all I see coming from an attitude like th...

Re: Pirating as a 'demo'. Your opinions?

Maybe mislead is the wrong word, maybe you actually want to see the game for yourself before you buy it, like trying on a coat. I can show you pictures of a coat, show you forum discussion about a coat, coat-in-action trailers etc, but actually trying it on is still nice. . . . except that the meta...

Re: Pirating as a 'demo'. Your opinions?

Because you can be mislead by a demo. You might want to see what a game is actually like in totality before you buy it. Maybe you want to know details about a game that are not represented in a demo before you buy. Well, I generally don't just look at the demo by itself; I'll often look at screensh...

Re: Pirating as a 'demo'. Your opinions?

Uhhh - if the game has a demo, why pirate? I find it highly unusual - probably just to thumb nose at authorities is all I figure. Technically speaking, it is violating copyright either way. Whether or not the authors of Factorio care may be a different matter. I do acknowledge Blizzard and EA chose ...

Re: What is factorio made in?

what does you make think that it is unity? I mean there came out a lot for unity game engine recently, but many really good games don't use unitiy at all. Probably just the fact that it supports multiple platforms. Indie developers with custom engines usually only target Windows because of the extr...

Have you tried responsive design :D?

You can do some crazy stuff with @media in a modern browser.

May even make the forums work well with mobile devices like smart phones.

Re: Save game file size + autosave lags

I'm not so much concerned about the file size (a few dozen MB in an era of GB and TB drives isn't gonna kill anybody's disk space) as much as the lag. Perhaps some sort of snapshot / copy-on-write system would allow saving the game's state while avoiding locking the entire system while the save is i...

Finished the campaign, about to embark on a generated game

Well, I just finished the campaign, and I'm about to start a new game via the map generator. My primary goal with the campaign was usually to accomplish the goals set forth in the campaign, so I probably didn't really do everything optimally. My new goal with the generated map is to have something I...

Re: windows 8?

Okay, so they don't list Windows 8 specifically - but yes, the demo is actually compatible with Windows 8. I've done it :).

99% of the time, when something is compatible with a lower OS, it's also compatible with a higher OS. Windows is usually pretty good with that.
