A splitter with priority input on the loop makes it loop forever (as long as you set up the priority before it fills up!)

The feature recently introduced in 1.1, where belts are locked into a straight line, and even more recently, where you place your cursor somewhere to the side of the belt, and press R to automatically place towards your cursor, could actually work in a more intuitive way:
