Such as a boat-load of advanced circuits for some alien artifacts? There already is a system sort of similar to this in the item crafting process itself. Just look at the belts and underground belts.

I second this motion, with the caveat that the creepers only have a low chance to drop artifacts, meaning that the fastest way to gain artifacts remains "adventuring".

I suppose you could start a rail line, hop on the train, and plop down straight tiles as you go. I've done that and it works fine, you can't get lost like with a car.
