Re: Give combinators the highest priority energy consumption
In my opinion, failure states are something that occur in real life, and as an engineer, I have to design solutions around. That's a perfectly legitimate perspective, except that factorio has already crossed that rubicon; lasers are powered ahead of mines, for example, and accumulators do not disch...

Yeah, you are right, I already halfway corrected my post.. To be clear I was only commenting about the information on the last chart above, not the one in OP, which looks a fair bit more intriguing.

Re: Fluid mechanics
I performed some virtual simulation and found quite interesting stuff: Imagine you have a two storage-tanks connected via long pipe (let say 100 pipe segments), and these segments were built one by one without using robots. If we do two almost the same experiments but with opposite direction result...

Re: Risks of the new 0.14 aysnc autosave features
Background saving would be TOTES AMAZEBALLS! On linux and mac they could probably fairly trivially achieve background saving by exploiting fork(). On Windows... well there is probably some way to do it but it'd presumably be harder (FILE_MAP_COPY on a memory-mapped file or some kind of PAGE_GUARD da...

Quad-pumped!?
In theory, since combinators slow down in low-power situations, it should be possible to exploit the polyrhythms created between under-powered and fully-powered combinators to create "phase-modulated" combinator designs which exceed the one <stuff-tuple>/UPS bandwidth-limit of red and gree...

Re: [MOD 0.13] Orbital Ion Cannon 1.4.2
Hey, just wanted to note, in the most recent update, I got the old ion-cannon-stats gui stuck open in my save. I had to issue the following command to get rid of it: /c game.players[1].gui.top["ion-cannon-stats"].destroy() Loading and unloading the mod would have worked as well, but at a c...

Re: [Pending] Alert: Highly Effective New Biter Strategy :(
I've seen this in a non-Bob's campaign (99%+ evolution). They tend to pile up behind lakes. They are just standing there. But if I go to kill them they wake up. I have seen as low as 1ups clearing these bases. I started building a map-scale laser-turret grid as they were simply spawning faster than ...

Re: Are there other functional smart furnace setups?
Yes, the problem is the 1-4 Iron Plates that may be left in the furnace, blocking the recipe switch. With the 0.13 circuit network possibilities there is currently no useful way to circumvent that (people tried to find solutions like in the linked thread above but there are no practical ones to dat...

http://media05.myheimat.de/2011/11/18/1894528_web.jpg?1321646391 Yeah, that's a fairly accurate flow-chart of my argument. As an aside, this appears to have been sculpted from the storied plate of the myth of Bob known as "gold" which was forged from a matching mythical ore. Of course the...

Re: Boolean Combinators
Upon reflection, think this question of computer logic vs. combinators is interesting and surprisingly rich. The factorio-cosmos is not the same as the meat-cosmos, obviously, even if the latter is a model for the former in the imagination of the Factorian gods. In the factorio-cosmos, red and green...

Re: [0.13.16] Map generation - Only one map - Seed defines pos
I second the request to treat this as a bug. Yes, the approach is fine; mathematically, using an extremely large surface and using the seed as an offset makes perfect sense. However, the fact that AntiElite found multiple overlapping seeds is strong evidence that it's not implemented right. I have ...

Re: Resource counting with combinators
So, with the simple decider counter with reset described above ... how would I store the value of the counter for use elsewhere in the factory upon receipt of the reset signal? Imagine a loop belt that has 10 copper plate on it and a single coal (for the reset signal). How can I get 10 copper as a ...

Re: Can anyone explain this?
I don't know the true precise aetiology beyond what's already been stated in this thread. I do wonder, though, if the presence of the splitter just before the smeltery, played a part, either by reorganizing belt-sidedness in a way that caused stone to get favored over coal, or creating a spotty belt...

Re: Inserters not picking up items
UI bug, very, *very* clearly a UI bug. Wonder how long denial will last... You can call it a bug all day long but a bug is a defect in the software such that it doesn't perform how it was designed to perform. The GUI is doing exactly what we programed it to do and therefor isn't a bug. Now, it can ...

Re: Can anyone explain this?
Yes, perhaps burners would have worked on the output side as well as they would pull coal from the furnace. But I hadn't thought of that, I guess. I've simply replaced them with electric inserters in my save but I am surprised to hear that burner inserters are unable to bootstrap themselves once th...

Re: What to do when the starting area runs dry?
In general, I find that it is surprisingly difficult to paint yourself into a corner, from which it is impossible to emerge, by depleting all your resources. In human history, quite the opposite seems to be the case for primitive societies, but modern globalised societies are seemingly -- at least l...
