Re: Are poison capsules too strong?
Poison Capsules are even decent against Behemoth Spitters, only the Behemoth Biter truly has too much hitpoints to justify poison capsules. The poison capsule deals 20 * 60 / 30 = 160 damage (from lua), this is consistent with 4 killing a big worm (3 x 160 = 480 damage - not enough to kill a Big Wor...

Re: Are poison capsules too strong?
Poison Capsules are very strong, they also scale in damage with the number of enemies (i.e. on death worlds they are very effective because so many enemies can cram into the cloud and the huge damage output of worms and spitters is unable to do anything to prevent that damage). They aren't super use...

Re: Biter Bases
This experience strongly suggests that if I focus my research on military and wait until I'm a little bit bigger (green science, Military 2), and if I'm willing to rely on mods, then in theory it should be possible to take out a biter base in the early to mid game and not lose my shirt in the proce...

Re: Belt Corner Speed or .12 got it wrong
Actually that's false. Any latency in a network is inherently a reducer of throughput. A slow signal to trigger a thing causes the thing to trigger more slowly. Don't you play internet games? I've used satellite internet, it has like a 700ms ping due to speed of light limitations. Bandwidth can be ...

Re: Belt Corner Speed or .12 got it wrong
I did multiple repeats of this test. Always the same result. Full video is here if you would like to study it but I think the frame by frame is pretty obvious and needs no interpretation. That corner is costing you throughput. It increases latency, it doesn't change throughput. Latency is one of th...

Re: Long distance pipes and pumps
Okay I did some extensive testing to try and confirm or eliminate a hypothesis, I've observed in the past that that pipe placement order can have at least a fraction of a percent impact on performance, my steam powerplants built close to limits often work 100% with a one pipe placement order, and on...

Re: Early Game Struggles
What I usually do is start by building up assets of about: 4-6 burner drills on coal, 7-9 on iron, 2 on copper, 1-2 on stone - all are in direct feed arrangement, coal burners feed directly into each other, iron/copper burners feed directly into a furnace, stone burners into a box or furnace. No bel...

Re: Productivity modules: where do you draw the line?
Putting 1x Productivity 3 into all of them will increase production by 1k per minute.. Thing is that's not what you do, you use alternating rows of furnaces and speed beacons, this multiplies the effect of each productivity module as it is in a furnace running at +200% speed, this dramatically redu...

Re: World generator difficulty level
I'm pretty sure that richness does absolutely nothing for the enemies, and if it does it's under the threshold for "human eye" detection, or in other words if I set richness to very low and destroy a bunch of nests, the number of artifacts dropped looks exactly the same as when richness is...

Re: Biter Bases
Tank + Defender Capsules + Poison capsules work pretty darn well, the damage from poison capsules stack and 4 poison capsules will destroy big worms - the throw range + damage radius is enough you can safely throw them while outside big worm range (also the Tank can take quite a few big worm spits d...

Re: A 6:84:60 steam powerplant (mainly) just for fun
It's obviously not a serious design - but I think in future I'll be exploiting parallel pipes for steam setups with 40 or 50 steam engines, it only starts to look silly with 60 or 70 steam engines.

Re: Do you find enemies to be a threat?
With MK1 Power armor now the enemies are no problem for us, at 55% evolution. Tank could use a buff however, it really stomps them early game but now its just useless. Maybe have upgrade modules or something. Not useless - you're just using it wrong. In the early game the Tank makes a decent bulldo...

Re: A 6:84:60 steam powerplant (mainly) just for fun
Do you get the full 30.6 MW? It looks like the right side is bottlenecked on hot water. The power plant is linked to a radar array which completely maxes it out, you can see all 84 boilers are indeed operating - I don't think it's even possible for the boilers to all be operating and the steam engi...

A 6:84:60 steam powerplant (mainly) just for fun
I was interested to see how many boilers and steam engines I could join together on a single water network and have it work at 100%, apparently there is no real limit as long as you provide enough parallel paths for the water to go and ensure that the water from each offshore pump goes through 14 bo...

Re: A guide to Night Steam with Hot Water Storage
Interesting idea, and I like the simplicity! Wouldn't it be even simpler to use regular 1/14/10 setups and drop the water tanks, and accept that you've paid a bit too much iron? I'm not sure how it works out cost-wise, I suspect it's pretty even. For a 1/14/33 I use 8 tanks though you can get away ...

Re: Productivity modules: where do you draw the line?
A couple of days ago I determined that if you're going to do the crazy thing of putting 12 speed3 beacons around a single depleted oil well, you get significantly more production by putting 2x prod3 modules in the pumpjack than 2x speed3 modules - although naive maths indicates 1x prod3 and 1x spee...

Re: Do you find enemies to be a threat?
The game is about factory building, the biters are just a diversion or mini-game. The mod misanthrope makes biters more aggressive about trying to wipe you out and makes them pretty savvy about exploiting gaps in your defenses, but it really just means you need to ring your factory in a wall of upgr...

Re: Modular 571 Refinery
That's impressive for your second game. There are slightly more compact designs (including the one I link to in my sig) which are the result of collaborative/competitive efforts to create the most compact and optimized refineries possible. I would say the only real flaw with your design is there are...

Re: Campaign 3 - New hope
If you're playing on maximum difficulty it's hard to take the biters in a fair fight without resorting to turrets or clever strategy. You can use defenders (and slowdown capsules) to distract the biters and worms while you run to the crash and claim the computer. If you stick to the forest along the...
