I'm fairly sure that you can stream into zlib compression. I think you can also stream base64 encoding. I'd have to do more research. The program never terminated at 8192 size. It ramped up to about 23GB of ram usage, and then stayed there using about 5% of my CPU for a couple hours before I stopped...
