My bases tend to grow organically (read: horrible spaghetti) and I always incorporate the terrain into my base defenses. Cliffs are unbreachable walls, and lakes are uncrossable moats. If you like, one could use the "Waterfill" mod to actually create moats.

Figured it out- Salt Water Electrolysis. Put the salt and pure water into an electrolyzer.
Started a new game. Need to make Chlorine for plastic production. FNEI says I can make brine in a chemical plant from salt and pure water, but the recipe doesn't come up. What do I need to unlock?

I think every Factorio player has a chest(s) with random junk in it. I usually put the first one near the first offshore pump so I can remember where it is.
