Re: CPU performance benchmarks

I tried running the benchmark (123_311219.zip) on my PC.

Factorio used 33.6GB of RAM and about one core of CPU.

Performed 10000 updates in 707618.482 ms
avg: 70.762 ms, min: 45.903 ms, max: 798.719 ms

My CPU does not have good single-thread performance

Re: Wave defense, annoying personal roboports, recursive blueprints and more.

Yeah, the personal roboport can be alright if you're not under massive time pressure. If you grab the early upgrade points you can probably give yourself some breathing room of 4-5 days (about 30 minutes), or even more. Or if I am building something using partial blueprints (I do not think Factorio...

Re: Wave defense, annoying personal roboports, recursive blueprints and more.

Interesting, when I build something using a blueprint I prefer it to be done with the personal roboport robots. Reason being that when I do so, I am usually some distance away from my base and really do not want to wait for the bots to come from the base and bring the various materials.

Re: Killing nest are becoming annoying - Strategy to play?

When I started playing, I did not use modules for a while. Instead, I just accepted that there will be biter attacks and built defense, starting with gun turrets, then, once I had oil research done, upgrading to flamethrowers and lasers (lasers have high peak power consumption, I had to use accumula...

Re: Planning vs Winging it

But a reason you don't see solid fuel used often ni burners is that coal is much simpler to process and deliver (basically 2 steps), where Solid fuel takes 5 steps plus extra energy cost to do all the oil processing. I figured out that using coal liquefaction, then converting heavy oil->light oil a...

Re: Planning vs Winging it

Speaking of power.... I've never done a launch on more then 80MW power. And most of the time demand doesn't go past 60 or 70, and I'm being totally sloppy at this point. One disastrous biter attack got me paranoid, and rapidly fell down the pollution control rabbit hole. ... For the majority of the...

Re: Killing nest are becoming annoying - Strategy to play?

How can I automate placing radars and running power to them in newly-occupied territory? Without mods I mean... Blueprints (absolute grid alignment) with power, roboports, laser turrets (or land mines), artillery and place from map view. I'll try next time I decide to expand. Clearing nests is prob...

Re: Planning vs Winging it

As many already told, you can send a rocket (an official win) without optimizations and plannings. Yeah, I launched the rocket without many optimizations. It took a while to build it and I was in no rush. I was expanding the territory, killing nests and the rocket was slowly built. I think at the t...

Re: Science Pack Names

Red flask (or bottle), green flask...

I first played Factorio a couple of years ago and they were called science pack 1 and such - and some of them had slightly different recipies, so when I loaded my save in version 1 I had to redo some things.

Re: Killing nest are becoming annoying - Strategy to play?

Spidertron with one portable fusion, two batteries, three exoskeletons and the rest personal shield Mk2. Character grid with one portable fusion, two batteries and the rest personal laser defense. This combination kills most biters pretty fast (even faster if you have researched upgrades to the lase...

Re: No alert sound for destroyed train.

There are no biters where my trains go :)
Though it would be useful to get an alert if a train is held up for too long ("no path" or gridlocked trains)

Re: [POLL] Left- or Right- hand rails and roads?

I drive on the right side of the road and my trains in Factorio run on the right as well. I am used to it and then the signals are on the outside and less confusing as to which signal belongs to which track(also sometimes there is not enough space between the tracks). There are a couple of places wh...

Re: Planning vs Winging it

If you wanted to get fancy enough you could solve all of that noise with circuits I use circuits to shut all that collection of refineries and chemical plants down when output boxes get full. I am converting coal to solid fuel because I get "free energy" out of it, so might as well make t...

Re: Planning vs Winging it

I usually do not read guides as it is more enjoyable to figure things out by myself. As for planning - well, when I was building my coal -> solid fuel plant, I just did some quick ratios, but then looked at what is happening. Is the light oil tank getting full? Add more light oil->solid fuel chemica...

Re: Coal liquefaction energy efficiency

It looks like some update changed this to where coal -> solid fuel conversion produces energy. I tested using this setup: screenshot-tick-25341879.png All electricity is produced locally. I used 300 units of coal and two heavy oil barrels (to have enough heavy oil to start the process). No modules. ...
