Belts have two sides. Inserters always place items on the opposite side. This allows you to make sure each half of the belt only carries one specific type of item, so that recipes requiring two inputs only require one belt/inserter.

When I use items, logistic robots aren't delivering anything to me to replenish what I just used or taking away items I put in the trash slots. The items still show up in logistic storage and are placed when I use blueprints, it's just the character that the bots won't interact with.
