Frequent graphics driver crashes

I frequently get the "the video card has been physically removed from the system, or a driver update for the video card has occurred" error (DXGI Device removed and reset). I have rebooted my PC multiple times and my GTX 1080 is up to date. It is not overclocked. 16 gigs RAM. i7-7700. SSD. Build is a standard Alienware R6. It is a megaworld, producing around 6500 science per minute, but the PC doesn't seem strained (based on task manager stats). I ran Steam's repair function, but nothing abnormal came up. There doesn't appear to be any specific trigger in game. No other game crashes. It is just...random. Any tips for resolution?

This can have multiple causes, e.g. a power delivery issue when switching power states of the graphics card.
