[0.18.34] Entities make sounds when not in radar range on the map

Post by Striped_Monkey »

Anything that makes a sound will still make the sound whether it's in a revealed chunk or not, this includes unexplored (blacked out) chunks. While relatively minor it does allow for some "cheating" with Artillery/etc. when you can hear where biters are on the map.
Don't you wish you could smile?

Yes absolutley. I thought about that already when they introduced this behavior. Being able to hear far away entities when hovering over an area in map view, simply gives the player information she/he should not be able to get that away.
I wonder, if this behavior could be used in PvP to gain info about enemy factories, before even discovering them. I guess, as biters are a different force and you can hear them, it can.

I think I like your suggestion, to only enable this behavior, when the area in question is permanently visible by radar (if I understand your post correctly). It just makes much more sense.

yes I've noticed this too. I wonder why sounds are heard from the map at all if you're liking it to radar or high-altitude camera sourced information.

A part of me wonders if fixing this would make the game slower.
