[0.17.11] Texture Compression makes graphics explode (i.e. make the game unplayable). Mac OSX 10.11.6

Post by Sevans7 »

What did you do? Load game through Steam, enter new or previously loaded world with Texture Compression set to something other than "None".
What happened? Graphics of overworld were corrupted. It seems the world is mechanically functioning properly, I just can't actually see what I'm doing because of the graphics. (see image 1 & 2).
What did you expect to happen instead? Expect graphics to be fine!
Write down the steps to reproduce the bug if you know them. Load game through Steam on Mac OSX 10.11.6 with Texture Compression set to Low Quality or High Quality. (Texture Compression requires restart to update, so I changed value before quitting game, then reentered game.) Start a new world, or enter a previously created one.
Does it happen always, once, or sometimes? Happens always - I have done multiple tests with each setting for Texture Compression, with other graphics settings constant. (See screenshots)

If I am missing anything important & helpful please let me know, this is my first time reporting a bug.

When you choose Apple Menu>About This Mac..., what does it say for Graphics?

Does this problem occur for you in all 0.17.x releases, or is it new in 0.17.11?

Have you tried playing with the Texture Streaming, Atlas Size, or Video Memory Usage options?

Thanks for the report.
Please post also Factorio log from

Graphics: Intel Iris Pro 1536 MB
The problem occurs in all 0.17.x releases after 0.17.(2 or 3). Before 0.17.(2 or 3) I can't get the game to launch at all. (I don't recall if the cutoff is at .2 or at .3. If it would be very helpful to know this let me know and I can go back and check, but at the moment I am pressed for time.)
I may have tried different combinations of playing with the Texture Streaming, Atlas Size, or Video Memory Usage options, but I didn't track it. If I devote more time to messing with the factorio settings I will investigate if any combination of these setting fixes or helps the graphics issue.

Steps to generate following log:
Opened the game, and switched Texture Compression=None to =Low Quality. Exited the game. Opened the game and entered a new world. Exited the game. The following is the "factorio-current.log" .

Thanks for the log.

Interestingly the compression test passes; we have multiple reports of this and they all seem to be on macOS 10.11; I'll see if it is always 10.11.6 and possibly disable compression by default on that version.
