Like chemical plan and oil refinery but only horizontally.

I think the whole point is to make building space platforms more challenging, hence the assymetrical placement of the fluid inputs, and the fact they are bidirectional.

Not happening. Build "V" thrusters or sushi, if you want boring straight engine

I was curious, and I looked at the prototype data https://github.com/wube/factorio-data/b ... s.lua#L791 but I can't work out why it doesn't let you flip it.
I don't want to cheat so I can't be bothered trying to work it out myself, but I am curious.
If you really want thrusters to be easier, you can use this mod that makes them symmetrical https://mods.factorio.com/mod/symmetric-thruster
There's also a mod that has pre-flipped variants of the thruster https://mods.factorio.com/mod/maft
And one that adds an extra pair of inputs https://mods.factorio.com/mod/simplified-thrusters
But I can't find one that just lets you flip the vanilla one.
I don't want to cheat so I can't be bothered trying to work it out myself, but I am curious.

The thruster is not challenging, it is simply a pain. Not funny at all.
The same "challenge" word was used in Factorio 1.* for Oil processing facilities, and guess what? Now they can be flipped in Factorio 2.0
So please don't use this as an excuse for not allowing them to be flipped.
If you want to flip them, do it, if you don't want, don't do it. Impose the challenge to yourself, not to others.

From what I could tell from sifting through the API docs, it appears that only CraftingMachinePrototype allows you to flip it, due to having graphics_set_flipped and forced_symmetry properties. Any other entities when "flipped" are just changed to the correct rotation. Asymmetric entities that *aren't* under CraftingMachinePrototype, which wouldn't have a valid rotation for being flipped, simply aren't allowed to be flipped. e.g. rail signals, train stops, burner mining drills and thrusters are all asymmetrical buildings that cannot be flipped since they aren't crafting machines.
