This is for eliminating the need for having a train stop at the beginning of the train. Instead, add a car selector at the station in the schedule as shown.
It also seems silly to have to have so many train stops when all you want to do is step through a few cars at a time. So you would also need a "step by x" option
By default, a station would be set to car 1 so no existing schedules would be affected.
There are many issues that this would eliminate. The game would align the train based on the car number selected, and the rest of the train going forward could be on curved tracks. You could actually use long trains without all of the absurdities.
When trying to use long trains, you would no longer need to worry about having all of the stepping stops be on a single straight rail for alignment purposes.
You would no longer need to use mods for this like described here: viewtopic.php?f=194&t=100714
The whole issue with pumps not connecting to fluid wagons on curved rails would be gone.
Please consider this! Not everyone likes to just use a bunch of 3 car trains. The factory must grow! Let train length do the same!
Train Stop Length Selector - Step train by X

Re: Train Stop Length Selector - Step train by X
Unlikely.
In order for the train to not violate rail blocks in front of the train stop, the trains pathfinder would have to be given a goal that is in front of the train stop so the train would be really traveling to a goal that is in front of the train stop. Issue would be if there are rail splits in front of the train stop because in such case the substitute goal would be ambiguous: head of the train could select one of multiple paths.
