[1.1.6] CTD because of "graphics card removed physically"

Factorio crashed hard with the error message, that the graphics card was removed physically from the system.

Now, I swear I did not remove the graphics card. ;-)

And all other applications kept running just fine, as was win10.

I did not change anything on my PC or OS in the last 2 months. I didn't even install any new applications. This came completely out of the blue.
EDIT: The only thing that was different in the last week, was that instead of shutting down the PC/win10, I let it go to sleep mode at night over a week or so. But without factorio running in the background. (can not remember that for sure).
EDIT2: Something else I did differently was to play Zak McKracken in a browser DOSBox during that time. ( https://archive.org/details/msdos_Zak_M ... anced_1988 ). It was active in the background at the time of the crash. Maybe that caused something in some graphics layer?

Any clue what this is about? Any experiences with that?
Thanks!

The error can be seen on line 282:

factorio-current.log
(777.76 KiB) Downloaded 122 times
For reference, other reports with same error message:
91224, 78199, 74642
For reference, possible solutions:
88040, 65323, 67588

After reading through the posts and suggested solutions, I decided to first restart the PC - as it has not been done for a week or so, set autosave interval to 10 minutes and see what happens in the next days. The course of action after that might be to disable "flip presentation model" and " force-opengl" as suggested in the posts.

[1.1.6] CTD because of "graphics card removed physically"

So today it happened again. That is twice in 8 days after years of no problems.

Error messages start on line 173.

The context today was unremarkable:
- The game version changed to 1.1.6 in the meantime.
- First, I think I woke the PC from hibernation, but not entirely sure about that.
- But the PC was freshly started today. I know that for sure.
- There was no Zak McKraken in a browser dosbox running in the background.
- I was not on a map, I was downloading a mod.

This time I took some time to inspect more on my system and I found that the nvidia drivers are over a year old (440.x vs 460.x). Last time I just assumed they are updated automatically. Mea culpa! I installed the new drivers, also selecting to perform a fresh install and deleting all configurations (vs updating old drivers and keeping configs).

Let's see if that changes anything.

I’ve had this issue before, but it only happened a few times and I assumed it was just me messing with something I wasn’t supposed to.

I would have a look into the windows event-manager, under category system. Probably your graphics driver has crashed.

This just happened to me too - i7 6700k/RTX 3070. Error appears on line 147 of the log file attached. The entire game followed by the entire computer froze up, and when it unfroze, factorio had crashed to the desktop.
