I've been playing vanilla for a couple of months and I am enjoying the game and have started a new game with mods for the first time. Currently I've only got Nanobots. Is it possible to add mods to my current save or do I have to start again with the mods installed first?

Make a copy of your save file and play we what you will with the new one. Some mods are comfortable for every mod, but some are incompatible.

You can add and remove mods as you like, for mods that fundamentally change vanilla gameplay it would not be practical though.
