pyanadons coal processing accuracy questions

Good afternoon, i was hoping i could get some info on this. now yes, i understand pyanadons is not perfectly accurate, but I'm not sure if I'm missing something, but this seems sort of obvious.
why exactly does raw coal processing produce iron oxide???
from the little i know on the subject, this should be the opposite, with coke being used to process iron oxide, not it being produced by processing coal.
although the tar and coal gas is moderately accurate.
i was also told pyanadons is a chemical engineer of some sort, or at least knows quite a bit, so I'm pretty sure I'm wrong.
could someone explain?
