Classic.

I think it has all the charm of Windows 3.1 on a wet Sunday afternoon.

The entire gui template sprite sheet is accessible to modders - the default tileset and tilesets used by every base style.

Fonts can be changed - you can even mod in your own TTFs if you like, e.g., Comic Sans if you feel like buying the license for it. Font styles (colour, weight) for things like headers and labels are also all accessible.

Most of the base styles for layout are also 100% moddable. There are some generated at runtime that can't be overridden, but in some of those cases you can still override the parent styles.

You can even get down to fine control like changing the way disabled crafting buttons are tinted, and remove the black glow from icons on slot buttons if it offends you.

So your actual modder has about 80-90% control over this if they can be bothered, and they have more time than taste.

Wube could do the same as any other software and offer light (grey) and dark theme.
They could. Or they could not bother. None of the other 150 games in my library has themes.

The sense of entitlement on these forums is getting out of hand.
Every heard the term "customers"?

Whoever said "the customer is always right" was a moron.
However it was pointed out as early as 1914 that this view ignores that customers can be dishonest, have unrealistic expectations, and/or try to misuse a product in ways that void the guarantee. "If we adopt the policy of admitting whatever claims the customer makes to be proper, and if we always settle them at face value, we shall be subjected to inevitable losses."

Entrepreneurs are not omnipotent, neither are their employees. Most businesses, especially the fledgling ones, operate with limited resources including limited time, funds, and energy. Every business experience its share of grudging customers, who, whatever might be done to satisfy their needs, will continue to complain.

Feeling guilty and culpable for such petulant lot is actually unwise and it affects your business in a negative way. If the necessary steps have been taken to address the issues of a customer, entrepreneurs should close the matter and move on.

It Makes Employees Unhappy
It Gives Abrasive Customers an Unfair Advantage
Some Customers Are Bad for Business
It Results in Worse Customer Service
Some Customers Are Just Plain Wrong

Classic in the same way you predictably start vehemently ridiculing anything that you personally dislike. It's like you're afraid that they might actually change something that could make you end up on the "hater" side. Maybe you should use your valuable time for something different than shouting at people on the internet.

Oh, I've got all the time in the world at the moment. You can expect another three months of this. Minimum. Unless I die, obviously.

And nobody's "shouting", unless it's the voices in your head.

If you kept the border and background (behind the light tiles) dark, I could even work on that :D
Seeing it inverted really shows how monochrone the whole gui design became. When even the forum has better accents and readability you should redesign ;)

But this is really nice, it gets rid of that grid illusion.

I wasn't sure if it was indeed modable, but seeing how it is hopefully someone will come up with something.

I've done a quick edit to new-gui.png and the result looks already a lot more pleasing to my eyes:

Best yet, it doesn't change too much from vanilla and removes the depth issues with the black causing strain.

I like the GUI update. But no GUI is perfect, and can't suit everyone. Although I prefer the dark mode and don't mind the grid as is, The feedback is good.

Here's the finished mod: https://mods.factorio.com/mod/ClassicGUI
Currently changes inventory, crafting and signals picking gui to be less of an eyesore.

It's good that there's a mod for this. Because that's where amateur efforts based on personal preference belong.

No, I don't think of myself as a professional artist. I just like the new "eyesore" the way it is, the way I've been looking forward to it ever since it was previewed in April 2019.

I'm sorry, but it's not the voices in his head. You're just deaf to your own cacophony.
