I'm 160 hours in. This change is going to make it so I can't earn achievements anymore on this save? Really?
No, you can still earn achievements on the save, just not all of them, considering some of them require you to finish the game in less than 40 hours, those were already locked away from the save anyway, it's even possible nothing additionnal is locked by the change, you can actually already see for yourself if you have upgraded to .45.
Strong possibility you've over simplified the case. My guess is that the '160 hours in' part makes you think of the 4 time-base achievements which will have their conditions changed in 2.0.45. There are 10 affected achievements, and only 4 of them are out of reach at 160 hours. The other 6 could be within reach now, yet not after the 'bug fix' is applied. Of the 6 available, 3 never go out of reach, I do suspect that It stinks is already earned, however, at 160 hours in, yet that's only a guess, not a sure thing.

I know it was stated earlier by someone, but my particle update time has increased by 1.5-3x (.700 to 1-2.8ms now) with this version. A little investigative work has narrowed it down to the new particles for the Gleba plant destruction by agricultural towers. I have maybe 40 agricultural towers on Gleba. I cut power to them and my particle update immediately dropped back to update 2.044's update time. Could the new particles perhaps get a optimization similar to asteroid particles where the game wont use cpu cycles on particles not currently being displayed? Like if I am viewing Nauvis, the game is still using cpu to update those particles on Gleba even though I am not viewing them.

I don't believe it is the case. You are not saying something different than i did. You are correct the time based achievement are already locked away from the save, so this won't change anything.
Depending on OP's game, which achievement are already owned , it's possible no additionnal achievement is locked. If OP has already crafted manually too may items, lazy bastard is locked for example, if OP doesn't have yet a legendary mech armor full of legendary gears, this isn't locked.
But there is no need to speculate, since OP said the map was updated already it's easy to see, and potentially downgrade to the "stable" version if it's problematic. The "experimental version" the only one that has been changed so far, is susceptible to change anyway that's the purpose of it. Things are different for speedrunning categories than for a single "save-file" /"game".

I'm sure this has been brought up before but this change is extremely frustrating from a casual perspective. I'm 120 hours into my Space Age play through on a Rail World which currently allows for achievements. Disabling them retroactively for everybody who has made a similar decision feels terrible. My choices are to either start again on a different "default" setting (because Rail World is apparently not default) or continue playing without achievements.

No you can also keep the "stable" version instead of the latest "experimental" if you don't want to experiment but prefer stability.
And even if you keep the experimental, you would still have access to most achievements, though with 120 hours in the game, some are already failed so if you wanted to get all the achievements you'd need to start again.

Yeah, as an example I don't have that legendary mech armor achievement, or the fish one, the shattered planet distances, and a handful of others. It's not clear to me from the discussion which achievements my settings will block. It's frustrating, I don't think it should be this way, but its not the end of the world. I feel way worse for the railworld players.

None of those you mentionned given the information from this thread, and the changelog !

I think there's no need to, most players that play railworlds knows they arent going for the speed achievement, those are like opposite philosophy.

Thanks so much. Just for clarity, how can I find out which achievements are affected? Is there a comment I'm maybe not seeing?
Thanks again.

Speedrunners : some of us are wary that the change could destroy the 100% run category
Panzerknacker wrote: Fri Apr 18, 2025 8:47 pm
Also, since many things are changed in 2.0 anyway (like removal of rocket control units), making 1.1 runs incompatible with 2.0 runs, wouldnt it be better to stick with 1.1 anyway for this 100% category?
Then with >2.0 we have the real deal achievements, which will better for the game, as you can read in kovarex's great explanation.
Aka Wouldn't it be better if the 100% category was removed from space age and people just stick to no space age 1.1 for speedrun in 100% ?
The question cannot be more disingenuous i think.
Nah ur wrong, space age is only out for 6 months, the amount of time invested in trying to speedrun it 100% is really neglible compared to 1.1. So it's good they push this change now instead of later. I've seen mostly veteran speedrunners here that hold records for 1.1. Running SA 100% is a completely different league.

2nd contvertial change since 2.0 release.
1st one (removed toggle to disable smart dragging) was reverted 2 weeks and 8 versions later.
Looks like I will not be buying SA in the near future. I don't like how some things started to progress with this game in 2.0...

To me that's just more visible now that your question : "wouldn't it be better to stick to 1.1 for 100% category ?" is disingeneous. Because you know what opinions were expressed here, and proceed to answer to your question yourself in the opposite way as what was already answered before you asked.

"Have you not understood from the feedback on this thread that this will not be in fact a completly different league, but will instead share some rules that were introduced in .45 that may prevent this category from exisiting entirely because if the starting rules are strictly enforced it can reach a point where it forces player into default settings merging 2 of what is now distinct categories into just 1 " ?

Fine, merge it. The speedrunners will need to adapt to how the game evolves, like the other players. Like me for example, I went back to 1.1 because I think the better fluid system outweighs all additions from Space Age.

The affected achievements are the same ones affected by the peaceful mode, etc. noted in the Wiki at
Achievements. The change discussed here only alters the conditions, making them stricter, not the list of affected achievements. (So far, anyway.)

To me that makes it not an example of adaptation, rather the opposite.
And it's surprising to hear you spend your energy arguing on a change that doesn't affect the version of the game you decided to play for unrelated reasons.

I'm closely following the improvements they make because ofc I'm looking forward to a exceptionally great game. I'm confident they will reach that state but I'm not in a hurry, I know how much time went into polishing the vanilla game, it's also not something you can force yourself to finish, it happens over time by playing, taking breaks, overthinking stuff, doing a change. And repeat.
I really dislike many modern games where you can adjust difficulty on the fly, skip hard missions, crap like that. In that light, this was a great change imo.
Now I aint gonna say more here.

I usually don't play the game i dislike so it doesn't bother me, i thought it would have been the case that you wouldn't be bothered by a change on a version you don't play. x)

Just an update:
1. In the next release, all saves started with version prior 2.0.45 will not have the achievements limited the new way.
2. There is a new popup which tells you which achievements (and why) are going to be disabled if you start with these settings. (In the map generator gui).
3. I still have plan for bunch of new achievements for 2.1, which should make 100% run even more convoluted (=intereseting for most people hopefully), I'm even considering to add a 100% run mode, which would be the way to get one special achievement of you getting all achievements in one go. There are arguments against it, so it is still part of the discussion.
I personally am looking forward the moment, when I add these new acheivement, and will personally try to make the 100% run, the only way to see how hard it is and to make some possible balance changes.
