What happens if MP players use different mods?

I mean, I'm sure there'll be some kind of error message and an abort, rather than the game proceeding.
But what exactly happens?
And how much information is given out? Are the players told specifically which mods they need to (download and) enable or need to disable, in order to be able to join the on-going MP game that they were just rejected from?
